Verse 1:
The founders of our nation lived each day,
Undertaking all for God's great name;
Still trusting in the Lord to guide their way,
To live in peace and His goodness proclaim.
But in the course of human events
tyrants and trials would oppress them and assail,
God as their hope and only defence,
By patr'ot blood their freedom did prevail!
Refrain:
We hold these truths given by God
inscribed on fabric of creation
that all are created equal in love.
Blessings and rights for all this nation,
no earthly pow'r may grant or take them;
so with praise to God and hearts courageous
May ev'ry soul guard faithfully
the right to life liberty and happiness.
Verse 2:
Though war was fierce, in vain it was not fought.
For the highest cause no price be spared;
Through darkness freedom by the war was bought,
And vict'ry won, independence declared.
Beneath the skies so spacious and so bright,
and over plains and from the sea to shining sea,
A Nation bold as a guiding light,
and "huddled masses yearning to breathe free"
Refrain
Verse 3:
Our freedom is not owned but borrowed,
and if treasured not will soon be lost,
We must defend for those who follow us,
And stand prepared for our liberty's cost.
Our hope is in the Lord, in God we trust.
We pray our nation turns from all its evil sin.
May we repent and turn to the cross,
And walk in Christ, made pure and whole within.
